Unknown Spain – Ronda & Casares & Gibraltar

Hi everyone!

We woke up to an absolutely wonderful day in Marbellathis morning! We slept in a huge villa, which we found on airbnb a where we had this self-made (finally healthy) breakfast on the roof of the house.

We came to Marbella when it was already dark yesterday and we went to diner right away, so we didn’t really see anything. We fixed that the next morning after breakfast. Actually there isn’t much to see in Marbella apart from hundreds of luxurious villas and hotels, restaurants, swimming pools, promenades and several beaches, but even that can be considered as sightseeing. The only thing I wanted to see was the big concrete sign marking the city’s entrance.

Then, we drove to Ronda as we planned. Ronda is a small historical city about an hour away from Marbella, that lies on a … rock, connected by a huge stone bridge.

Another hour away from Ronda there is Casares, a small town, where you wouldn’t find anything else except all-white houses. There is also a hill above the city, where you can see the whole beauty.

And another hour away there is the famous Gibraltar. Who has never been here, this place is definitely worth a visit, at least because of the monkeys, that live all around this mountain. It’s Great Britain’s independent territory, so people pay here with Gibraltarian pounds, speak English and if you want to get here, you have to cross the official border. What we found pretty unreal was the airport runway, so in case an airplane is landing, you have to wait a few minutes on the red lights. You can get to the mountain either by the cable car or your own car, which is actually not recommended because the monkey can destroy the car pretty easily by hanging on your side mirrors, begging for some food.

I’ve actually been to Gibraltar about ten years ago, but my memories are not very nice. When I was shooting some pictures from a view point, leaning over a wall, one of the monkeys ran up to me and bit me in my shoulder, so I dropped my camera down the cliff. Instead of exploring beauties of Gibraltar, I spent the whole day in the local hospital. Well this time, we survived without any injuries and after sunset, we took off for Lisboa.
But more about the capital of Portugal in the next post!
Love,
E.
